Arvada Sunrise Rotary and Apex- Honor a Senior

Senior Nomination: Tuesday, April 13th, 2010, 7 am

Name: Mary Stipe

Today we honor Mary Stipe as a Senior Hero.  Mary is an amazing volunteer who is a survivor and a bionic woman, overcoming cancer and three joint replacements, and currently recovering from shingles.  At age 78 she continues to volunteer weekly at the Community Recreation Center as a front desk customer service representative.

She has served in this position since 1999 and over the eleven years has donated over 2050 hours. She is quick to greet people, answer phone, register participants and welcome the hundreds of seniors who visit during her Wednesday morning shift.

Additionally Mary helped to give direction to the Community Recreation Center as she served on the advisory board for several years.  Mary has also served as a volunteer for the 9Health Fair for 10 years, and has the pins to prove it.  Mary volunteers because she enjoys helping and has passed this passion on to her children.

Mary is a Colorado native and was born in St. Luke’s Hospital.  She grew up in Denver, attending Cathedral High School and Emily Griffith School.  She married an Arvada native in 1950 and raised five children in the Arvada area.  Most of her adult life she has lived in Arvada, except for a 7 year stint that she and her husband moved to Pueblo for his job.  Her husband passed in 1983.

Mary has 13 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.  It is important to Mary that the family keeps together, and that they don’t let petty tension get between them.  She wants them to be there for each other, as they have been there for her during her health challenges.

Besides volunteering and grand parenting Mary also has enjoyed creating stained glass art, dog grooming and obedience, water aerobics, playing Bunko with the “girls,” and gardening.

Mary truly is a hero as she keeps on going and giving, even when health challenges make it tough.  We thank Mary for making a difference for others.
