About the
Speak Up! Scholarship Challenge
The Arvada Sunrise Rotary Club is pleased to present the First Annual Four-Way Test Speech Contest and Scholarship Program. Up to four students from Arvada High School AND up to four students from Pomona High School will be selected to present their speeches on the evening of April 21st, 2010 at the Arvada Center. Scholarships will be awarded to the top TWO contestants. Participant gifts will be given to the other contestants.
Purpose
Arvada Sunrise Rotary is a service club committed to serving students in the Arvada Community. This Rotary Club conducts a Four-Way Test Speech Contest to benefit high school youth. The specific goals of the contest are:

To acquaint a large number of youth with Rotary and the Four-WayTest.

To demonstrate and enhance Rotary’s commitment to youth

To heighten awareness of Rotary among youth, parents, schools, and community.

To recognize, encourage, and reward hard work and accomplishment among youth.
Eligibility

Arvada High School and Pomona High School students in 12th grade are eligible to enter the contest.

The student must have a minimum GPA of 2.0.

Students must submit a completed application by February 26, 2010.
Topics and Theme
The Speak Up! 2010 theme is “The Future is Up to You” which is also the Rotary International theme. Any topic related to this theme will be accepted, provided it is not profane, obscene, unpatriotic, or racist. If a contestant or coach is in doubt about the appropriateness of a topic, the coach or students may check with the Contest Chairperson of the Arvada Sunrise Rotary club. The Chairperson’s decision will be final. The topic of the speech must be specifically subjected to the Four-Way Test. This must be done in the body of the speech and is not to be reserved for concluding statements only.
The Four-Way Test
Of the things we think, say or do:
First….Is it the Truth?
Second...Is it FAIR to all concerned?
Third...Will it build GOODWILL AND BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
Fourth...Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
Rules
Length of Speech
Speeches must be not less then 6 minutes and not more than 8 minutes in length. Penalty points will be subtracted for time infractions at the rate of 2 points for every 15 seconds over or under the minimum or maximum.
Props
No props are to be used. Audience participation will be considered a prop. Penalty
points will be subtracted for use of props at the rate of two points per infraction.
Speaker Aids
Lecterns and microphones will be available for contestants to use if they chose.
Notes
Contestants may use notes on 3”x5” cards.
Order of Presentation
Order of presentation is determined by lottery. Contestants who arrive after the
competition has begun will be disqualified.
