Three members traveled to Kenya to check on the Oldonyonyokie Water Harvesting Project and took numerous children’s books and other school supplies with them. This was greatly appreciated by the teachers, parents and children.
Libraries have been created at the Brydges Orphanage, Nymwanga, and Tombe Elementary Schools. Five pallets of books, teaching materials and school supplies were sent by air in September. A team of teachers helped train the students and teachers on library use and scheduling. Books by Kenyan authors were purchased to augment the many books collected in the USA.
Eight schools in Kenya and three in Uganda have been identified for libraries as part of an emphasis on community development. A team of Rotarians, friends and businesses have been created to plan and execute book collection efforts.
Transgroup World Logistics is collaborating on all aspects of shipping and has volunteered warehouse space for storing books. Fifteen Rotary Clubs are participants in the grants involving these schools and will be involved in the collection, repair and sorting process.
Rotarian Don Howard and his wife, Pat Colfer, will travel to Kenya and Uganda to make arrangements with Rotary Clubs for the receipt and distribution of books to identified schools.
A team of Rotarians will travel to Kenya in November to work with the community and schools to establish libraries.
