Arvada Sunrise Rotary and Apex- Honor a Senior

Senior Nomination: Tuesday, June 8, 2010, 7:10 am

Name: Laura Miura

Laura Miura does not let her 92 years slow her down. Laura is a great role model for staying active in your senior years. It is rare for Laura to miss her twice a week line dancing class that she has been attending for 12 years at the Community Recreation Center, and prior to that she had been dancing for 5 years at Holiday Hills. She line dances because it keeps her challenged, keeps her mind alert, and because she vowed not to do housework after she retired in 1975. She attributes her longevity to good eating habits, exercising three times a week, line dancing twice a week, and trying to stay mentally alert.

Laura was born in 1917 in Sacramento California, where she grew up and went to junior college. She married her husband Tod in 1941 and shortly after they married they were relocated to the Japanese American Internment Camp, where their first son was born. He was the third baby born in the camp. Her parents and two brothers were also in the camp. They were relocated in the camps several times, to Utah, Arizona and Colorado. They stayed in Colorado and have lived in Westminster for over 50 years. Their son lives in Arvada, and their daughter in Hawaii. They have one grandson. She and her husband will celebrate their 69th anniversary later this month. Her advice for a long marriage is to give in and not to go to bed mad.

Laura worked for 20 years for the Colorado State Insurance Department. In addition to line dancing Laura enjoys reading, trout fishing, swimming, snow skiing and crafts. Her favorite phase of life is the present time as she and her husband enjoy their freedom from work. The words of wisdom she would like to pass on are to eat well, exercise and enjoy your friends.

We honor Laura and her zest for life.
