April 2010 'News from Kenya' - Don

Greetings Rotarians,
This is the latest installment of 'News from Kenya' and the news about the container that's been held in bondage since last August is good. The SCOPE project continues to grow with the prospect of having a library as the main drawing card. 50 additional schools have signed up for 2010-2011 and more than 25,000 more students will benefit from having access to the english language books, computers and school suppllies that we'll be collecting between now and June. That translates to a need for more than 100,000 books, enough to fill two containers.
SCOPE has begun promoting business start ups for groups in poverty situations such as HIV positive men and women and unemployed youth, many of whom have graduated from high school and even college. Start up funds ranging from $35 to $1200 will be provided on a reimburseable b asis. Business plans and a repayment schedule must be presented as part of the application process. SCOPE has field workers assisting the communities who will monitor the start up projects. What I hope to create is a network of business men and women in the US and Kenya willing to adopt a business by providing start up funds and offering advice that will help the business be successful. I hope some of you will be interested in becoming social intrepreneurs and be part of the start up program.
The Karen Rotary Club of Nairobi has agreed to be SCOPE's partner and will be handling all SCOPE funds. The club is relatively new, has more women than men, and is known for its' 'can do' spirit. I plan to work with them on a Future Vision grant for next Rotary Year and will be looking for a US Rotary Club that's part of the Future Vision pilot to be the Karen Clubs partner.
